English Version
Macau, a Chinese territory under Portuguese administration since the 16th century, is a fast growing city in the heart of Asia. Situated at the east rim of the Pearl River Estuary, it is only 70km from Hong Kong, which is an hour's voyage by jetfoils. Macau has played an important role as the rendezvous of eastern and western cultures for the past 400 years. It will continue playing such an Important role after being returned to China beyond December 20, 1999.
The enclave of Macau consists of one peninsula and two outlying islands; Taipa and Coloane. They are linked together by modern bridges and causeways. Under the handwork of the Macanese, Macau obtains most of its land by reclamation which is now the home of almost 400 thousand people, with 95% Chinese and only 5% westerners. including native Portuguese. It is the most densely populated and yet one of the wealthiest area in the world. A new international airport is due to complete in late 1995. By then, Macau will be one big step closer to the rest of the world as the gateway to Southern China.
Scouting in Macau began in 1991. Later, Scouts from China and Portugal started their troops in different schools and communities. The glorious history of our predecessors could still be found engraved on a stone tablet in Jardim Camoes, a famous tourist spot at the center of the city. On December 12, 1983, the Associacao de Escoteiros de Macau (AEM) was founded in the Governor's Palace, symbolizing the revitalization of local Scouting after decades of inactiveness. Under the strong support of the Government with the blessings of the Asia-Pacific Regional Office and The Scout Association of Hong Kong, the Escoteiros de Macau has been growing in prosperity over the last decade. By using the principals and method of Scouting, AEM has conducted various kinds of training activities upbringing the character, skill and knowledge of all its members in different sections. Due to the unceasing hard work of all leaders. AEM has lived to its reputation by providing quality services to all social events in the enclave. In the 1993 Municipal Council Election. Scouts were invited to serve in the polling stations, the outcome was a smooth and orderly voting. For this reason, AEM received a citation from the Electoral Committee and a high remark from the government officials as well as the public.
Looking forward, Macau has over 100 thousand students aged between 6 and 21 -which implies a great potential of development in local Scouting. Facing with such a big market of human resources in a comparatively small city, AEM needs huge support from WOSM, especially member countries in the Asia-Pacific Region. With the cooperation and assistance off the Government, AEM is at all times ready to set sail into the ocean of International Scout Movement with the prestige it has earned all these years.
